Altaro VM Backup v7 Released for Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V! #WS2016 #HyperV @AltaroSoftware

Introduction

Altaro has released Altaro VM Backup V7, a faster and lighter upgrade to its flagship Hyper-V and VMware backup solution, which now supports Windows Server 2016 and includes several highly-requested features including unique Augmented Inline Deduplication technology, Boot VM from Backup, Faster compression algorithm and New look for Altaro’s Offsite Backup server.

In today’s blog post, I will give you a quick overview about Windows Server 2016 support, Augmented inline deduplication, and boot VM from backup technologies which are in my opinion the best features.

Windows Server 2016 Support

In windows Server 2016, Microsoft introduced  Changed Block Tracking (CBT) mechanism. CBT allows applications (such as backup software) to find out which blocks of a file have changed since a previous point in time.

Unfortunately, in Windows Server 2012 R2 (and earlier) with Hyper-V, there was no built-in support for CBT. So every backup vendors (such as Altaro), at that time, had implemented a file-system filter to track the change blocks on the storage, but having a third-party file system filter in the kernel host OS is a potential system-crashing bug, and which may or may not be compatible with the storage at the backend.

Pre-version of Windows Server 2016, If you consider a virtual hard disk that’s a terabyte in size, an incremental backup would involve reading the whole file to see what had changed and only back up the blocks that have changed. Whether using direct-attached or network-attached storage, this full-file scan can take a long time, which increases already-tight backup windows.

With Windows Server 2016, CBT (also referred to as Resilient Change Tracking, or RCT), the function moved from the guest operating system to the hypervisor level, as Hyper-V has the information about the changed blocks in a Virtual Machine (VM). Vendors such as Altaro Software seek to the parts of the virtual hard disk file that have changed and only read the changed blocks, which significantly simplifies and speeds up the backup and recovery of Hyper-V VMs. Best of all, this technology is transparent, and does not require any configuration or management from the system or backup administrator.

Augmented Inline Deduplication

Altaro’s unique Augmented Inline Deduplication the best deduplication in the industry by creating the smallest backup size when compared to other vendors, it delivers faster backups and restores on local and offsite locations by making sure that only new data is transferred to the backup or offsite location. The Augmented inline Deduplication technology solves a common problem found in conventional backup solutions today which deduplicates data after the transfer process (Post-Process Deduplication). However, with Altaro VM Backup v7, that process happens before the data is transferred (Inline). Augmented Inline Deduplication runs across all backup jobs in real-time and there is no need to group VMs together like what most other vendors require. This process not only provides blazing fast backups, but it also reduces significantly huge amount of storage needed to store backups more than any other solution on the market today.

Boot VM from Backup

Boot VM from Backup is another innovation in Altaro VM Backup V7 that enables users to instantly boot any VM version from the backup location without affecting integrity of the backup. If disaster strikes, the VM can be booted up instantly from the backup repository with minimal downtime, while the VM is restored back to Hyper-V or VMware in the background. A simple VM reboot completes the recovery process and preserves any changes done while the VM was booted.
