Introduction

CloudBerry Explorer for Microsoft Azure is the first cloud file explorer that natively supports Microsoft Azure’s latest blob storage tier Archival Blob Storage. Back in December 2017, Microsoft announced their latest flagship of storage tiers known as Archival Blob Storage. Azure Archive Blob storage is designed to provide organizations with a low cost means of delivering durable, highly available, secure cloud storage with global reach for rarely accessed data with flexible latency requirements.

What is CloudBerry Explorer For Microsoft Azure

CloudBerry Lab is the first cross platform Cloud Backup for Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, HP Cloud, Rackspace Cloud Files, OpenStack, DreamObjects and other.

CloudBerry Explorer for Microsoft Azure is a simple Azure storage explorer tool that allows you to access and manage Azure storage accounts as well as moving files and folders between your computer and Azure Blob Storage / Azure Files.

In this post, I will show you how to install CloudBerry Explorer and connect to Microsoft Azure Blob Storage and Azure Files.

Requirements

The requirements are very basic:

  • OS Support: Windows 7 or higher, and Windows Server 2008 or higher.
  • Hardware: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, 512 MB RAM, 32 GB minimum disk space, Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
  • Software: Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 or higher.
  • Product: Cloud Berry Explorer v3.0.1.3.

Install CloudBerry Explorer

The installation is very simple, launch the setup and follow the wizard.

Click I Agree to accept the License Agreement.

Once the installation is completed, launch CloudBerry Explorer and activate the product. Azure storage client by CloudBerry Lab comes in two versions – Freeware and PRO. Check at the end of this post to learn more about the difference between the two editions.

Connect To Microsoft Azure

Once the activation is completed, select the desired Cloud Storage. As mentioned previously, you can use CloudBerry Explorer to connect to Azure Blob Storage and to Azure Files. You can also use it to connect to Personal OneDrive and OneDrive for Business.

Add the desired Storage Account name, Shared Access Key, and the Account Type. Click Test Connection to verify the access.

Once your connection is succeeded, you can browse any container that you might have inside the storage account and start uploading/downloading files. The Blob Storage is ideal for:

  • Serving images or documents directly to a browser.
  • Storing files for distributed access.
  • Streaming video and audio.
  • Writing to log files.
  • Storing data for backup and restore, disaster recovery, and archiving.
  • Storing data for analysis by an on-premises or Azure-hosted service.

You can also connect to Azure Files and do usual file operations as well. Azure Files offers fully managed file shares in the cloud that are accessible via the industry standard Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Azure file shares can be mounted concurrently by cloud or on-premises deployments of Windows, Linux, and macOS. Additionally, Azure file shares can be cached on Windows Servers with Azure File Sync for fast access near where the data is being used.

Last but not least, you can copy files between two Azure Blob storage accounts. Please note that when you copy files between different storage accounts they go through your local computer.

Summary

CloudBerry Explorer for Microsoft Azure is a simple Azure storage explorer tool that allows accessing and managing Azure storage accounts as well as moving files and folders between your computer and cloud storage. If you are familiar with Azure Storage Explorer, CloudBerry Explorer Freeware edition looks similar. The Freeware edition allows tracking, analyzing and debugging your usage of storage. It also comes with full support for Microsoft Azure Storage Analytics.

However, the PRO version makes Azure Cloud Storage management even easier, more secure and efficient. It allows you to optionally enable encryption and compression for your files, upload faster with multi-threading and more. The license is per computer and onetime fee, and the price is not expensive either. I highly encourage you to download CloudBerry Explorer for Microsoft Azure and give it a try.
