Update Rollup 1 for System Center 2019 is Now Available #SystemCenter #SysCtr

4 min read

Hello folks,

I am glad to share with you that Microsoft just released the first Update Rollup (UR1) in 2020 for System Center 2019. This is the first update rollup that Microsoft released for System Center 2019. This is unusual since the update rollups cadence was normally scheduled to be released every 6 months.

Please find the description for each component that is fixed in System Center 2019 UR1 including the new features that are included in System Center 2019 Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), and System Center 2019 Data Protection Manager (SCDPM) UR1.

System Center 2019 components that are fixed in Update Rollup 1 are the following:

Update Rollup 1 for System Center 2019 is Now Available #SystemCenter #SysCtr 1 Virtual Machine Manager 2019 UR1➡(KB4533411 & KB4533412):

You can obtain and install the update package from Windows Update directly, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), or you can go to the following URLs and manually download the update packages:

This UR update has a significant payload for VMM 2019, you can find the issues fixed below (around 13 bugs fixed and functionality updates):

  • Unable to add Windows Server 2019 hosts in an untrusted domain to SCVMM.
  • Changes to VM network adapter or VM network overwrites associated ACL.
  • Unable to pull LLDP information on pNICs bound to a vSwitch.
  • Long-running service template deployments time out after 3 hours. The timeout parameter can now be configured to time above 3 hours using the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Server\Settings\GuestCommunicatorStatusTimeoutSecs registry key to any desired value.
  • VMM service experiences high memory usage with a large number of objects created in tbl_ADHC_HostVolume
  • Unable to assign VM network to VMs on the hosts
  • Automatic Dynamic Optimization fails on clusters in the untrusted domain
  • VMM jobs take a long time to run whenever there is a VMM server failover to another node.
  • Storage Provider Refresh fails when the NIC has no MAC present.
  • Unable to create a file share with the same name on different file servers through the SCVMM console.
  • Cluster creation fails when VMM service is running under gMSA account with ‘Access denied’ exception.

In addition to these, all the issues fixed in System Center 2016 VMM UR8 and prior URs for VMM 2016 are also fixed in System Center VMM 2019 UR1.

Improvements and new features in UR1:

  • With VMM 2019 UR1, you can deploy Ubuntu 18.04 Virtual machines.
  • Nested Virtualization for VMs can be enabled through VM Template, service templates and while creating a new VM through the console.

You can run the following PowerShell script that will help you to automate the VMM agent update on all your managed Hyper-V hosts.

# Get SCVMM Admin Account
$AdminAccount = Get-SCRunAsAccount -Name ‘SCVMM Admin’

# Get Current SCVMM Agent Version
foreach ($VMMHost in (Get-SCVMMManagedComputer)){
    Get-SCVMMManagedComputer | FT ComputerName, AgentVersion -AutoSize
}

# Update SCVMM Agent
foreach ($VMMHost in (Get-SCVMMManagedComputer)){
    Update-SCVMMManagedComputer -VMMManagedComputer $VMMHost -Credential $AdminAccount -RunAsynchronously
}

# Confirm SCVMM Agent Version
foreach ($VMMHost in (Get-SCVMMManagedComputer)){
    Get-SCVMMManagedComputer | FT ComputerName, AgentVersion -AutoSize
}

See the following Knowledge Base article for details about these fixes and installation instructions:

KB4533416 Update Rollup 1 for System Center 2019 Data Protection Manager.

The main new features that were included in this release are the following:

  1. Support for protection workloads running on Resilient File System (ReFS) volumes.
  2. Support for Windows Server Core. You can install DPM 2019 UR1 on Windows Server Core 2019 and 2016 but with one caveat. You cannot install the MARS agent on Windows Server Core. In other words, DPM cannot be connected to Azure Recovery Services Vault when it’s installed on Server Core. A hybrid backup is not possible in this scenario.
  3. Support for an additional layer of authentication and security when deleting Online/Azure backup.
